Being lifelong travelers, we all love our lightweight, multipurpose gear that can withstand the rigors of the road. Gear should be dependable, multifunctional, durable and perform beyond expectations. Nothing could be truer when it comes to buying a good hiking backpack, especially considering it's going to be your home away from home. Traveling, especially long-term, will literally test the limits of your bag and your body, and as such this decision should never be made impulsively. Buying your backpack should not be a rushed decision and factors like trip length, capacity, material, functionally and comfort should always be considered. When I first got serious about investing in a good pack, I was at REI for a good 3 hours -I think they started to suspect I was applying for a job.
The first thing you should look at is where you are going to use the backpack for. Outdoor backpacks come in so many specialized designs, there are hiking backpacks, fishing backpacks, backpacks for water sports and so on. These different backpacks all have their own functionality but you may not need all of those extras. If for example you need an outdoor backpack for a day trip, you don't need one that can carry a tent or a sleeping bag and also probably don't need a lot of storage space so a smaller day pack would be fine. When on the other hand you need a backpack to go on a weekend hiking trip, you Will need the space to carry all the necessary items along. If your outdoor activities bring you close to water like kayaking or rafting, it's wise to look at a more waterproof outdoor backpack. So determine the usage of the backpack as well as the environment you are going to use it in.
Not only do you want a backpack that will be comfortable and well-suited for your hiking needs, you will need a backpack that is durable and will stand up against the wear and tear that multiple hiking trips will require of it. The fact is, you truly do get what you pay for and that includes short-changing yourself when buying the right backpack for the occasion. Be sure to test the zippers, buckles, snaps and other closures, as well as the seams and straps. Once you are out on the trail, you don't want a backpack that is going to fail you.
Be sure you choose your backpack with padding in the back area and a pack with two wide padded shoulder straps. The padding across the back makes it much more comfortable as well as protecting your kid from sharp book edges or other pointed items stored in the backpack. The wide padded shoulder straps provide more comfort than a thinner straps, and these straps are not as likely to rip away as quickly as the thinner ones under the weight of the backpack.
Included on your backpacking gear list would be backpacking guides to ensure you know where you're going once you set out exploring the great outdoors. To have a positive experience on one of your outdoor adventure vacations, be sure to learn how to pack a backpack for hiking before leaving the comfort of your home. Hiking for beginners will only be as successful as the preparation process allows. That is why it is so critical to take all the backpacking advice you can to heart.
You will also want to get a backpack that is large enough to contain the essential gear related to the length of trip you are planning to take. Learning how to pack a backpack can go a long way in helping you choose just the right backpack for the occasion. Not only will you be ahead of the curve by approaching backpacking from this angle, you will be less likely to find yourself out on the trail with a backpack that is either too heavy or loaded with unnecessary equipment.
