If my three hours was any indication, buying a good backpack is not an easy task. With hundreds of backpack manufacturers and styles, it can understandably be overwhelming. Whatever you do, don't go cheap. You'll be doing yourself a disservice and end up buying a new one anyways. A good backpack is an investment. You needn't spend $500 on a backpack, but be wary of cheap, no-frills, run of the mill $70 brands, as you'll regret the design flaws and absence of extras. Spend a little more for a good backpack from a trusted brand, and it will be your companion for many trips to come. The Osprey pack I eventually settled on has traveled with me from the U.S to the Middle East for 10 awesome years and I know it has another good 10 years to go.
When choosing a pack, choose one with a waist belt; it may not look as stylish but it will help in distributing the weight of the pack evenly across your child's back. If you start your child with a waist belt early when they're carrying a backpack it will become more of a habit for the child. Once it is established as a habit they will continue to use it and are less likely to have problems. Once they reach their teens this simple device will provide much less back and shoulder stress.
A properly fitted, well-designed, and durable backpack is going to be the best available choice for avoiding any discomfort, pain, or even possible long-term injury to your child. The experts at the American Physical Therapy Association have been studying backpack for years. Through their research, the APTA has discovered the main things that make a good backpack. Properly designed and well-padded shoulder straps, load stabilizing adjustable straps, a waist belt to place more weight on the hips and off of the shoulders/back, and several internal compartments to divide the load more evenly.
Another thing to consider is something many tend to overlook: comfort! There is no shame in being as comfortable as you can when backpacking. In fact, comfort can increase the level of enjoyment when hiking the great outdoors. Before purchasing your backpack, make sure to try on several different styles. Don't limit yourself to a particular backpack simply on the basis of what others say. Keep in mind: you will most likely be wearing your backpack for long periods of time. This being the case, it is vital that you choose just the right backpack that will be the most comfortable and still designed to carry all the gear you will need for the trip.
Kids and teenagers love trendy stuff and while there's quite a vast selection to choose from, what will work for them is a drawstring backpack that they find comfy and what's currently in vogue. For the girls, bags in pink with flowery decorations will be appropriate while the boys will prefer their traditional blue. The boys might also prefer the themed backpacks that have their favorite hero or their preferred game. Fun color combinations, polka dots or the freakish out of the ordinary type of bags that kids and teenagers love to have.
It's also a great idea to do dog backpacking because it is the way a hyperactive dog can be controlled. They cannot irritate you on trips. While carrying backpacks, dogs also have a lot of fun. A large variety of such dog backpacks is available. Some have Velcro fasteners while the others have nylon straps, which have plastic buckles. Some of the backpacks also have pockets, snaps and zippers. So, make sure that you get the backpack with the right kind of accessories. Also, do not ignore the quality while trying to save costs. It can cause so many problems like bleeding when the backpack falls. You can also be stranded on mountains without supplies when the backpack cannot be taken any further as it has broken down.
